Children and the Internet

Protecting children from inappropriate content on the Internet can be a daunting, if not impossible task. Other than keeping your children away from the computer altogether, there are a few things you can do to add additional barriers between your children.

Remember, the best protection for children is adult supervision!

It is important to note that there are NO settings in Windows, Internet Explorer, or most any browser that will protect your child from inappropriate content. Most "Kid friendly" search engines do very little to protect your children. It is extremely easy to get out into the open Internet.

Serendipity recommends that children do not have computers that are online, in their bedroom. Also, what may be helpful is to use Mozilla's Firefox browser, and use the Bookmarks Toolbar to keep appropriate sites easy to access.

Kidsclick
Kidsclick is a kid friendly search engine. It is a searchable directory of websites created for kids by librarians. Searchable by subject, reading level and degree of picture content.

Net Nanny is a  popular Internet filtering software program that now includes features to block inappropriate sites. There are several other programs that do this as well. In addition to blocking web pages, the program allows selective blocking of access to chat, instant messaging, internet games and newsgroups. The program can also be configured to prevent illegal downloading of copyrighted or obscene material.

Of course, Serendipity encourages you to read with your child every chance you get. Nothing compares to sitting down with a goodbook. However, if you want to enjoy some stories online, Between the Lions (A Serendipity favorite) has a great site with stories:

"In the US, at least 91 children were backed over and killed in 2003; (more than one child per week) often by a relative in their own driveway, and often by a larger vehicle such as a van, SUV or pickup truck."

Every day nearly 1,920 children are reported missing and according to Law Enforcement Officials, most can be quickly found if their parents immediately provide police with a complete record of identification.
Parents should always be prepared.
